Four high school students were awarded a collective $5,000 in college scholarships during the recent Dugan’s Got Talent competition hosted by the City of Owensboro’s Parks and Recreation Department. Daviess County High School’s Jo Jarboe, a silk aerialist, won the contest and took home a $4,000 scholarship.
Second place was awarded to dancer Abby Burns, an Owensboro Catholic High School student who received a $500 scholarship. Vocalists Abigail Oakes (Glory and Grace Academy) and Ava Schimp (Apollo High School) took third and fourth, respectively, with each winning a $250 scholarship.
Dugan Best Recreation Center Director Mike Gray said to see the youth of the community display their talent was refreshing.
“Plus, being able to provide a scholarship to the top contestants to further their education and help them pursue their dreams is what the Center is all about,” Gray said.
All 10 contestants showcased their talents in a live performance on April 14. Other contestants included:
- Paulie Frashure, Apollo High School
- Madeline Payne, Apollo High School
- Matthew Boarman, Owensboro Catholic High School
- Spencer Combs, Owensboro High School
- Matthew Smith, Owensboro High School
- Kaylee Nichols, home schooled
The event was sponsored by Independence Bank, whose Community Enrichment Officer Susanne Story said, “It takes bravery for these students to get up on the stage and share their talents.”
