Daviess County got hot late in its season opener on Monday, grabbing a 10-5 road win over a solid Ohio County team to kick off the year.

The Eagles struck first, taking advantage of two Panthers errors in the bottom of the first by earning an RBI single from senior Jaylen Walker and a two-run single from junior Davey Hiner to take a 3-0 lead after the bottom of the first. With two hits entering the fourth, it was a hit by pitch and an error y Ohio County that kickstarted a rally for the Panthers, as senior Ethan Ahart chipped in a two-run double before a single from senior Xander Brubaker led to a fielder’s choice from junior Carter Nichols and a 3-3 tie heading into the bottom of the fourth.

Meanwhile senior Cason Troutman was holding his own on the bump, allowing just one more run in the bottom of the fifth—wrapping up his day with seven strikeouts while allowing one earned run and surrendering four hits in his first start of the season. His teammates returned the favor with three more runs in the top of the sixth, while senior Jackson Beckwith allowed just one run on two hits and struck out three in two innings out of the bullpen to seal the deal on a 10-5 road victory.

Ahart led the way at the plate with a 2-3 day and three RBIs to go along with it, while senior Layton Huskisson chipped in two RBIs and Nichols, Troutman and junior Lake Wilson added one each. Daviess County opens the year 1-0, looking to keep things rolling in their home opener against Breckinridge County at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
