The Daviess County Public Library is hosting a job fair for teens ages 14 and older on March 16. Representatives from several businesses — including Holiday World, Kroger, and Panda Express — will be at the library looking to hire workers.
The event will run form 4-6 p.m. at the library (2020 Frederica Street).
Karen Russell, a manager at EM Ford, and Dr. Nikie Walker, an Assistant Professor in the Business department at Brescia University, will be available to conduct mock interviews and answer teens’ questions about resumes, interviews, and the job search process.
This job fair represents a partnership between the library and the Owensboro Youth Empowerment Summit (OYES), an organization founded in 2007 by The Rev. DeMarcus Curry. Curry said that OYES initially focused on topics such as bullying and youth mental health, but during the pandemic, the focus shifted towards helping young people connect with employment opportunities.
“This job fair is an opportunity for our teens to get a head start in the workforce,” Curry said. “It also showcases to employers how many assets young workers can bring to their business.”
“Many teens want to work, but if they’ve never held a job before, they may not know how to get started,” said Teen librarian Sarah Jacobs. “We hope this job fair will make the process less intimidating. Not only will we have multiple employers in one place, but we’ll also have business professionals in attendance who can serve as a resource for teens who have questions.”
