Owensboro Catholic couldn’t recover from a tough start on Thursday and fell to Evansville Reitz in their final regular season game, while a strong fourth quarter from Gage Phelps and company led them to a comeback win over Union County to close out the regular season.
Owensboro Catholic vs Evansville Reitz
A rough start to the night ended up being the Aces downfall in their regular season finale on Thursday, as they weren’t able to climb their way back on top and lost to Evansville Reitz 62-61 on the road.
Owensboro Catholic couldn’t find a rhythm offensively early on, being held to single digits in the first quarter and hitting just one three in the first half to find themselves down 36-22 at the break. The Aces turned things around completely in the second half though, grabbing 39 points with five threes from deep and a 10-10 clip from the charity stripe.
However, Evansville Reitz bounced back from a 10-point third quarter in the fourth, fending Owensboro Catholic off with a 62-61 win. Senior Brian Griffith led all scorers with 22 points in the loss, while senior Parker Gray had 15 points and junior Tutt Carrico had 15 points as well.
Sitting at 25-4 overall as the regular season comes to a close, as they now have a few days to prepare for their first-round 9th District matchup when they take on Apollo at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.
Daviess County vs Union County
A strong start and finish to the final home game of the regular season led to a win for Daviess County on Thursday, defeating Union County 57-45.
The Panthers were red hot from deep coming out of the gate, getting four from deep to take a 16-11 lead after the first quarter. They proceeded to hold the Braves to single digits the following quarter, holding onto a 28-21 lead going into the locker room.
Daviess County struggled coming out of the break though, being held to 10 points while Union County hit three from deep to help them claim a 38-37 lead heading into the fourth. However, the Panthers were able to limit the Braves to single digits in the fourth while junior Gage Phelps had nine of the team’s 20 to grab the 57-45 win.
Phelps was the only Daviess County player in double figures with 22 points, while senior Jack Payne had eight and junior Houston Oberts and sophomores Ayden Ayer and Jaxon Brown all had six points each. The Panthers improve to 13-14 overall to close out the regular season, as they now have some time off to prepare for their first-round 9th District matchup at Owensboro on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
