Apollo struggled to find any offensive rhythm in its loss to Logan County on Saturday, while Daviess County and Trinity relied on strong performances from Gage Phelps and Landon Huff respectively to grab wins to close out the week.
Daviess County vs Evansville Day
Outscoring Evansville Day in all but one quarter on the night, the Panthers offense was the key to success in a narrow 65-60 win at the Owensboro Sportscenter.
Seniors Jack Payne (seven) and Evan Hillard (six) got Daviess County going in the first, as they combined for 14 points en route to a 15-14 lead heading into the second. The Panthers were clicking on all cylinders in the second quarter, getting contributions from multiple players with junior Gage Phelps’ seven points leading them into the locker room up 34-32.
Evansville Day wasn’t going away though, as Tyler Myers—who finished with a game-high 31 points on the night—chipped in eight of the team’s 13 to cut it to a 46-45 deficit heading into the fourth. Myers grabbed 10 more in the fourth, but sophomore Jaxon Brown (eight), Phelps (five) and Payne (four) were able to outscore Evansville Day themselves to help close the door on the 65-60 win.
Phelps led the Panthers with 19 points on the night, while Brown had 14 and Payne finished with 11. Junior Houston Oberst, sophomore Ayden Ayer, Hillard all finished with six points each as well, while senior Decker Renfrow added three points to help snap Daviess County’s three-game losing streak.
Now sitting at 10-13 overall with the win, the Panthers will look to stay strong against McLean County on the road at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.
Apollo vs Logan County
The Eagles couldn’t capitalize on a strong start defensively, going cold on the other end of the floor in the second and third quarter of a 54-38 road loss to Logan County on Saturday.
Apollo had control of the game early, holding the Cougars to single digits in the quarter while getting seven points from senior Donte Dixon to take an 11-9 lead. But Dixon grabbed just three points in the second, with the only other Apollo bucket coming from senior Jaxon Hardin as they fell behind 25-16 heading into the locker room.
Logan County stayed hot coming out of halftime as well, knocking down four from deep while limiting the Eagles to single digits again en route to a 36-24 deficit heading into the fourth. Apollo bounced back with 14 in the following quarter, but were outscored once again as Logan County came away with the 54-38 win.
Dixon was the only Eagle to score more than six points on the night, chipping in a team-leading 18 points with five threes in the loss. Apollo falls 4-19 overall with its third straight loss, as they’ll take a few days off before trying to bounce back against Hancock County at home at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.
Trinity (Whitesville) vs McLean County
Trinity got off to a strong start defensively and senior Landon Huff went off late on Saturday, leading them to a 53-50 win over McLean County.
Jaxon Floyd led the Cougars early with six points in the opening quarter, but Huff added eight for half of Trinity’s points to take a 16-13 lead. The Raiders proceeded to hold McLean County to single digits in the following quarter, while sophomore Hayden Aull knocked down a pair of threes and Huff hit one to help them take a 30-22 lead into the locker room.
The Cougars were determined to claw their way back into the game out of halftime though, holding Trinity to six points in the third and making it a 36-33 deficit going into the fourth. McLean County stepped up their game offensively with 17 in the final quarter, but Huff had 12 of his game-high 26 points on the way to closing the door on a 53-50 win for the Raiders.
Trinity improves to 11-12 overall by snapping their five-game losing streak, as they’ll take a day before looking to make it two in a row in a home matchup with Ohio County at 7:30 p.m. on Monday.
