The E-gals and Lady Devils couldn’t sustain offensive success in their respective losses on Saturday, while the Lady Raiders got a 34-point performance from senior Josie Aull in a dominant win over Dawson Springs.
Apollo vs Hancock County
The E-gals couldn’t muster up enough offense on the road Saturday, dropping their second straight of a six-game road swing against Hancock County by a score of 59-48.
Apollo got off to a strong start, getting eight points from freshman Kennedy Lane and five from senior Gracie Survant to help them take a 15-10 lead after the first quarter. The Lady Hornets turned things around with 15 points in the third, but junior Jennifer Lee added seven of the E-gals 12 to keep them out in front 27-25 heading into the locker room.
Lane added eight more points to lead Apollo coming out of halftime, but she was the only player to score as Hancock County got rolling offensively and took a 42-35 lead into the fourth. Bailey Poole helped secure the 59-48 win for the Lady Hornets in the fourth, grabbing 10 of her team-leading 24 points from the charity stripe.
Lane led the E-gals with 24 points on the night, while Lee had 11, freshman Abby Sapp had six and Survant finished with five. Apollo falls to 7-17 overall with the loss, as they’ll look to turn things around in a road matchup with Muhlenberg County at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.
Owensboro vs Henderson County
The Lady Colonels caught fire offensively in the second half on Saturday, leading to a 58-52 road loss for Owensboro.
The Lady Devils defense helped open up the game in their favor, holding Henderson County to single digits in the first quarter. Following that up by outscoring the Lady Colonels in the second quarter, Owensboro went into halftime owning a narrow 21-18 lead.
Henderson County came alive coming out of the locker room though, as senior Jarie Thomas scored nine of the team’s 18 in the third to help them take a 36-33 lead into the fourth. Thomas grabbed seven more of team-leading 23 points on the night in the fourth as well, helping nullify senior A’Lyrica Hughes’ seven of her 28 in the 58-2 loss for Owensboro.
Freshman Unique Carter-Swanagan was the only other Lady Devil to score more than five in the loss, grabbing 11 points while going 4-6 from the line and knocking down one three. Owensboro falls to 16-7 overall with the loss, as they’ll look to bounce back on the road against Breckinridge County at 7 p.m. at home on Feb. 6.
Trinity (Whitesville) vs Dawson Springs
A solid start defensively paired with a dynamic performance from senior Josie Aull led the Lady Raiders to a win on Saturday, topping Dawson Springs 63-41.
Trinity’s defense set the tone early, limiting Dawson Springs to five points while Aull scored eight points to lead them to a 15-5 lead after the first. From then on it was the Josie Aull show, as she went on to finish the night with six made threes and 6-7 clip at the line to lead all scorers with 34 points and take the Lady Raiders to the 63-41 win.
Aull also had some help from sophomore Kenzie McDowell as well, finishing in double figures with 11 points in the win. Trinity now has a day off before returning to action, as they are set to host Ohio County at 6 p.m. on Monday.
