Daviess County Emergency Management Agency has issued a “White Flag” status for tonight, Monday, Nov. 26 and Tuesday, Nov. 27 from 7 p.m. – 8 a.m, due to the overnight wind chill expected to be at or below 15 °F.

During a White Flag Event, participating homeless shelters are requested to place a white flag on their facility’s exterior door, which shall publicly convey that extra bed space may be available.

What those seeking shelter should know:

Those seeking shelter and a warm meal may visit the Daniel Pitino Shelter (501 Walnut St, Owensboro, KY) at 5:30 p.m. Monday and/or Tuesday evening to enjoy dinner, and then, if bed space is unavailable at local shelters, go to St. Benedict’s at 7 p.m. for a warm night’s rest.

Those seeking shelter without a meal may show up on their own at St. Benedict’s any time after 7 p.m. tonight and before 8 a.m. tomorrow, and the same for Tuesday.

For those requiring transportation in rural areas of Daviess County (outside Owensboro city limits), please contact Harry Pedigo (270-315-4419) before 4 p.m. today.

GRITS may provide transportation to the Daniel Pitino Shelter, but only during the hours of 5-6 p.m. Monday and Tuesday evening.

For those without transportation inside the Owensboro city limits, the Owensboro Transit System has a bus stop near the Daniel Pitino Shelter. Anyone wishing to ride the city bus to the shelter needs to let the driver know and the ride will be provided free of charge.

This free ride is only allowed to the Daniel Pitino Shelter for the city busses at 4:35 p.m., 5:20 p.m. and 6:05 p.m. busses Monday and Tuesday evening.

According to the National Weather Service Paducah Office’s forecast, tonight and tomorrow night will be the only nights currently expected to reach White Flag criteria through at least Sunday, December 2, 2018.
