The Owensboro Catholic football team will have a challenge in their last regular season game, as they’re set to face a tough Elizabethtown squad who currently sits at 7-2 on the year on Friday.
The Aces are coming off an impressive run in district play, going undefeated and earning the number one seed in the 2nd district of class 2A. The Aces have set themselves up nicely for the postseason but aren’t looking ahead just yet. Head Coach Jason Morris understands the great opportunity they have in this upcoming matchup.
“We are expecting a great environment at home to finish out our regular season against a quality opponent in Elizabethtown,” Morris said. “We are hoping to improve our team RPI to set us up for a deep playoff run.”
These two programs met in the final game of the regular season last year, as the Aces defeated Elizabethtown 36-9. However, this is a much different Panthers squad from a season prior.
“Trey Durbin and Braydon Dean are as good as they come at running back,” Morris said. “Elizabethtown has good athleticism all over the field as well. Durbin is one of the best players we will face this season.”
Durbin has tallied 958 total yards and 12 touchdowns through just nine games on the season for the Panthers. The junior running back will have a chance to hit the 1,000-yard mark for the season at Steele Stadium, unless the Aces’ defense has something to say about it.
“We have to make Elizabethtown earn everything they get to win this game on Friday,” Morris said. “Tackling without giving up yards after contact continues to be a point of emphasis in practice this week.”
The Elizabethtown Panthers will travel to Steele Stadium on Friday night to take on the Aces at 7 p.m.
“We need to play a clean, turnover free game and execute every time we get the ball into the red zone to carry some momentum into the postseason,” said Morris.
