Owensboro Public Schools awarded their first ever Inspiration Award to 3rd-grader Grayson Brooks after he helped raise $350 worth of school supplies for Estes Elementary School’s kindergarten class.

Prior to the start of the school year, Brooks wanted to find a way to honor his younger brother Wyatt who died from sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) several years prior. As this year would have been the year Wyatt would enter kindergarten, Grayson contacted the school to see if there was a way to help get supplies for their class.

Brooks’ story went well beyond the walls of Estes as word spread about his act.

He was featured in Southern Living magazine and made an appearance on the TODAY Show. The exposure led to one individual in Virginia donating $4,200 to the OPS Foundation. The $4,200 will be split into $350 each year for the next 12 years, with all of the funds going to Estes.

“Grayson’s generosity and giving spirit has inspired so many, and that is why we are presenting Grayson with the OPS Inspiration Award in recognition of all you have done in memory of [his] brother Wyatt,” Superintendent Dr. Matthew Constant said.
