In response to their ongoing critical shortage, Daviess County Public Schools has initiated a program with the goal to fully staff bus driver positions. The program includes hiring, retention, and referral bonuses plus insurance and paid leave.

According to a Facebook post from DCPS, the program bonuses are as follows:

  • Hire bonus: Any newly hired bus driver who is successfully hired, completes required training, signs a contract, and works 6 weeks (after release) will receive a one-time $500 bonus payment.
  • Retention bonus: All contracted bus drivers who are active and in good standing at the time of payment, will receive retention bonus payments in the amount of $300 for each 9-week quarter of school. (Up to $1,200.)
  • Referral bonus: Any DCPS employee who recommends a new employee who is successfully hired, completes required training, signs a contract, and works 6 weeks (after release) will receive a one-time $250 incentive payment.

The following criteria apply:

  • Referral bonuses will not be split between employees. (i.e. Only one current employee can refer a new employee.)
  • You must be active and in good standing to receive any/all bonus payments.
  • Substitute bus drivers working a minimum of 15 hours each week during the 9-week quarter are eligible for hire and retention bonuses.

According to DCPS, benefits are as follows:

  • Paid training for bus drivers
  • Benefits eligible at only 20 hours per week
  • Health insurance options starting at $28.34/month (single) & $337.68/month (family)
  • Health insurance includes free telehealth visits, wellness program rewards, SmartShopper rewards program, 24/7 nurse line, and more.
  • DCPS optional insurances include dental, vision, employer paid basic life, optional life, short and long-term disability, critical illness, accident, cancer, and universal life/long-term care.
