Owensboro Catholic and Apollo were unable to string together runs in its respective matchups on Saturday, while Trinity (Whitesville) and Owensboro’s bats were hot en route to wins to close the weekend.

Apollo vs. McCracken County

The Eagles couldn’t turn hits into offense on Saturday, ultimately falling to McCracken County at a score of 5-1.

The Mustangs grabbed momentum early in the game, rattling off three runs in the bottom of the third to take a 3-0 lead into the fourth. Following a scoreless fourth inning McCracken County grew its lead once again, this time tallying two more runs to take a 5-0 lead.

While senior Nick Judd was struggling on the mound, he did supply the Eagles with their first run of the game thanks to an RBI double in the top of the sixth. While he cut Apollo’s deficit to 5-1, this is the only run they would score as they lost to the Mustangs 5-1.

Judd got the starting nod for Apollo, allowing five runs—four earned—on seven hits, while walking seven and striking out five in four and ⅔ innings. However, he did lead the way at the plate with a 2-3 day and the only run of the game.

The Eagles fall to 15-7 overall with the loss, as they will take a few days off to regroup before hitting the road to take on Hancock County at 5:30 p.m.

Trinity (Whitesville) vs. Heritage Christian Academy

Pouring in the runs in bunches throughout the game, Trinity (Whitesville) battled its way to a 12-8 win over Heritage Christian Academy on Saturday.

The Raiders grabbed the first run of the game in the top of the first, but the Warriors quickly swung momentum with three runs in the bottom half to take a 3-1 lead. Despite the quick offensive outburst for Heritage Christian, Trinity was determined to quickly shift momentum its way once again in the top of the second.

It started with an RBI double from junior Nathan Hernandez, before a balk let the Raiders knot things up at 3-3. A walk during the following at-bat allowed Trinity to claim the lead, but an RBI single from freshman Hayden Aull and two runs scoring on passed balls helped the lead grow to 7-3.

After grabbing two more runs in the top of the third, junior Landon Huff continued to silence the Warriors bats out of the bullpen. It wasn’t until Huff exited the game on the mound that Heritage Christian struck again, scoring once in the bottom of the sixth and four runs in the bottom of the seventh.

However, three runs combined in the sixth and seventh kept Trinity out in front just enough, securing a 12-8 win over the Warriors.

Huff was dominant in relief, allowing no runs on three hits, walking one and striking out six in four innings pitched. It was a quartet of Raiders leading the way offensively, as Nathan Hernandez, Aull, freshman Will Hernandez, senior Mason Mattingly all had an RBI each.

Trinity improves to 3-10 overall with the win, as they will look to add another one to the win column when they take on Butler County at 6 p.m. on Monday.

Owensboro vs. Madisonville-North Hopkins

Freshman Blake Kimbrell tallied four RBIs on the day, while fellow freshman Trevor DeLacey delivered a gem on the mound to lead Owensboro to a 13-2 win over Madisonville-North Hopkins on Saturday.

Going into the third inning the Red Devils were holding onto a narrow 2-1 lead, but were able to expand it to 3-1 thanks to a sacrifice fly from eighth grader Evan Hampton. But it was the top of the fourth where Owensboro really broke things open.

Having quickly loaded the bases to start the inning, junior Jalen Rogers opened up the scoring with an RBI single to center. Two runs were then let in by a walk and hit by pitch, before freshman Cayden Ray slashed a two-run double to left to take an 8-1 lead.

The following at-bat Kimbrell hit an RBI single, which was followed up by an RBI single from DeLacey three batters later to take an 11-1 lead into the fifth. This allowed DeLacey to continue to control the game on the mound, helping silence Madisonville-North Hopkins bats en route to a 13-2 victory.

DeLacey didn’t allow an earned run on the day, allowing just one hit, walking four and striking out four on his way to a win. Kimbrell led the way offensively with four RBIs, while Ray and Evan Hampton chipped in two RBIs each and DeLacey, Rogers, Elijah Hampton, and senior Kindrick Williams all added an RBI each.

Owensboro improves to 8-9 overall with the win, as they stay strong in its second of seven straight road games when they take on McLean County at 5:30 p.m. on Monday.

Owensboro Catholic vs. Glasgow

Unable to silence Glasgow’s bats throughout the game, Owensboro Catholic came up short and suffered a 9-2 loss on Saturday.

The Aces grabbed the first lead of the day thanks to an RBI double from senior Braden Mundy in the top of the first. However, the Scotties rattled off two runs in the bottom half of the inning to be in charge 2-1 going into the second.

Owensboro Catholic was able to tie things up at 2-2 in the top of the second thanks to a run being walked in, but they couldn’t keep Glasgow’s offense quiet for long. The Scotties went off for six runs in the bottom of the third, adding one more in the bottom of the fourth to take a 9-2 lead.

Having gained such a large lead, this allowed senior Ashton Cerwinske to settle in. He tossed all seven innings for the Scotties, allowing just one earned run on seven hits, walking four and striking out five en route to a 9-2 over the Aces.

Seniors Alex Castlen and Hayden Ward struggled on the mound, allowing a combined seven earned runs on 10 hits, while walking five and striking out six on the day. Offensively it was senior Sam McFarland and Mundy who led the way offensively, tallying an RBI each.

Owensboro Catholic falls to 15-4 overall with the loss, as they will take a day off before returning to action on Monday with a home game against South Spencer at 6 p.m.
