The Whitesville Historical Society is hosting a “1900s Themed Tea and Derby Program” on April 30 at the WHS Barn. Kentucky Humanities will present Hawesville’s Eddie Price as Roscoe Tarleton Goose, a jockey who won the 1913 Kentucky Derby.
Guests are encouraged to wear a Derby hat and 1900s period clothing.There will be a Derby hat contest.
Seating is limited. Attendees are asked to RSVP, along with sending a $30 donation, by April 25 to Whitesville Historical Society, POBox 231, Whitesville, KY 42378.
Proceeds will aid with restoration of the National Historic Registered Stinnett Home in Whitesville.
When Goose won the Derby, the race odds were set at 91:1 — the longest odds of a Derby winner, a record which still stands.
Price is a graduate of Kentucky Wesleyan College and Western Kentucky University. He worked as a high school history teacher for more than 30 years and a part-time instructor at Owensboro Community & Technical College for 21 years.
Price is the author of the award-winning historical fiction novel Widders Landing and is a member of the Kentucky Humanities Speakers Bureau.
