Track programs from Apollo, Daviess County, and Owensboro competed at the KTCCCA Class AAA Indoor State Championships in Louisville on Saturday. The event was contested at the newly constructed Norton Healthcare Sports and Learning Center and produced some top finishes by local competitors.
Reece Carroll of Owensboro dominated the boys’ side, securing a first-place finish in the 400-meter dash with a time of 50.62 and a fifth-place finish in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.73.
Eight-grade phenom King Combest held his own in the 60-meter dash, placing seventh with a time 7.10. Combest already holds the fastest middle school time in the nation and is inching closer to breaking that 7-second barrier.
Thomas Ashby led the charge for Apollo, running a 4:10.48 in the 1500-meter run with an impressive kick at the end to secure a second-place finish. The reigning cross country state runner-up also placed eighth in the 800-meter run.
Daviess County’s 4×800-meter relay team of Bryson McGary, Nolan Kurz, Justin Shelton, and Caleb Tidwell secured a third-place finish with a time of 8:36.22. Kurz, a sophomore, also placed fifth in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:03.47.
Eli Early of Owensboro finished seventh in the 60-meter high hurdles, while Seth Pippin and Collin Jones finished 9th and 12th respectively.
On the field-events side, Owensboro’s Ethan Pendleton finished second in the high jump, recording a height of 6-0.00. Nolan Haynes added a 12th-place finish in the pole vault for the Panthers.
On the girls’ side, Emily Rempe paced the Lady Panthers with a fourth-place finish in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:24.43. Lucy Spaw and Bentlei Stallings followed suit with 11th, and 13th place finishes in the 1500-meter run.
Saly Tidwell and Blakely Greer paced Daviess County in the 3000-meter run, finishing ninth and 10th respectively. Daviess County also tallied a fourth-place finish in the 4×800-meter relay with a time of 10:22.11, a new indoor school record.
Analea Sanders led the charge for Apollo with an eleventh place finish in the 60-meter dash with a time of 8.33. Teammate Chloe Andefu tallied a fifth-place finish in the long jump with a distance of 15-01.25. Her teammate Emily Berrtke finished 17th in the event.
Mary Ann Lyons, a sophomore at Apollo, finished fourth in the shot put with a throw of 31-06.75.
